My mum used to make these for birthday parties and other special occasions and I practically had to beg her for the recipe. As a kid you can imagine how chocolate squares with bright smarties on top can be so exciting - and they still are to me! They are great for making with children because there isn't much cooking involved. They are also perfect treats for Easter if you don't want to splash out on a ton of expensive chocolate eggs - just decorate with mini eggs instead of Smarties.

IngredientsMakes: 16 chocolate biscuit squares

  • 50g margarine
  • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces
  • 2 tablespoons runny honey
  • 250g digestive biscuits, crushed
  • 16 Smarties®

MethodPrep:10min ›Extra time:2hr cooling › Ready in:2hr10min

  1. Line the sides and bottom of a 18cm (7 inch) square tin with grease-proof paper (make sure the paper sticks up out the sides of the tin as you will need to use this to grip when removing the squares from the tin).
  2. Melt the margarine, chocolate and honey in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and fold in the biscuit crumbs until well combined. Spoon into the prepared tin, smoothing the top. Mark into 16 squares with a sharp knife and place a Smartie® in the centre of each.
  3. Leave to set in the fridge for several hours or overnight. Break into squares to serve.
